Paul Kane High School in St. Albert, AB opened to students in 1973. It featured two stories of classrooms that encircled a central atrium, with two gymnasiums, a cafeteria, a theatre, and an extensive industrial arts shop. The replacement Paul Kane High School was built directly behind the existing school, with less than 20 feet separating the new school from the two-storey gymnasium.
The schedule of hazardous abatement was extended due to the discovery of a substantial amount of extra asbestos containing material that had been covered during previous renovations. Additional demolition resources were brought to the site to compress the demolition schedule to ensure site restoration could be completed prior to the start of the new school year. As soon as the concrete foundations were removed from the first section of the school, the area was turned over to the earthworks subcontractor.
