To make way for the new Centre for Excellence in the Sciences, a phased demolition of the southwest wings of The King’s University was necessary.
The scope included removal of the two-storey structure, basement foundation, mechanical room, buried swimming pool, 20-foot-high overhead archway sign and a freestanding pillar style sign out front.
Visco collaborated with project engineers to develop a building separation plan, including engineered shoring to support portions of the structure remaining in place. Tight access conditions and proximity to active campus areas required controlled demolition methods, including hand separation in two locations to safely isolate the structure from occupied sections. Utilities were relocated prior to demolition and decommissioned in phases to maintain uninterrupted campus operations.
Given the active school environment, safety measures were implemented, including the use of spotters and area closures within the school zone to ensure public safety during demolition activities. Dust was managed through water application during demolition and debris loading.
Debris was sorted on site and hauled to landfill or Visco’s recycling yard. Visco achieved a 95% diversion rate for this project.
