The Highway 3 Twinning project stretched 44 km from Taber to Burdett, AB for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors. The contract included 30 sites within the newly planned Highway Right of Way.
The project scope included hazardous material removal and demolition of fourteen farmyards, three commercial sites, thirteen tree clearing sites, four test pitting sites and two contaminated soil remediation sites as well as a hawk’s nest relocation. The sites were completely cleared of all structures and foundations, including utilities, groundwater monitoring wells, water wells, cisterns, and septic systems.
Contaminated soil remediation required removal of 13,759 tonnes of hydrocarbon impacted soil and backfilling with compaction. A geomembrane liner was installed in two areas to prevent contamination from seeping into the future road construction excavation.
Trees were diverted from landfill and used for firewood in local campgrounds. The concrete, asphalt and metals recycling diverted 7,261 tonnes from landfill. The hydrocarbon contaminated soil was hauled to licensed facilities for remediation.
The utility relocation and other highway construction activities were scheduled to commence in early 2024, so Visco performed the work in the winter and early spring.
