The Alberta Government purchased 17 of the flood-damaged homes within the Elbow River flood plain in Calgary and designated the homes for demolition. Driveways were removed and new curbs were installed. Trees were protected at each site and restored to natural park-like settings.
One house at Sifton Boulevard SW had been built in very close proximity to the Elbow River. Since work was occurring within 3 m of a waterway and there was a concern that Styrofoam from the building could fall into the river, a work plan was developed in cooperation with Alberta Fish and Wildlife to protect this important fish spawning area. Workers performed a careful inspection for fish redds prior to starting the demolition, to ensure that it was safe to enter the water to manually retrieve any debris. Workers also erected wire-backed silt fence along the river edge to catch any blowing debris. Due to the careful demolition process, very little foam entered the river and it was quickly retrieved.
One house on Riverdale Avenue SW was so close to extremely luxurious homes on either side, that the bulk of the superstructure was demolished by hand.
This project was performed concurrently with the Hidden Valley Golf Resort Clean-up, demonstrating Visco’s capability to successfully complete large-scale projects.
