The Cross Bow Building was located in the Bridgeland area of Calgary. Initially opened in September 1961 as the Calgary Auxiliary Hospital and Nursing Home District No. 7, the structure served as a hospital until 1986 when it was converted to extended care facility. The demolition made way for a replacement extended care facility.
The hospital was constructed during a period when the use of asbestos containing materials such as wall plaster and drywall joint compound was prevalent. The abatement of the 55,000 ft2 two story hospital structure was completed by a large crew of workers in approximately 2 ½ months.
Given the proximity to the adjacent George Boyack Health Facility and neighbouring residential areas, special care was taken to limit the street bound construction traffic and prevent any demolition debris/dust from leaving the project site. Concrete was crushed on site.
The Project was a CaGBC registered LEEDv4 (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Project with the Canada Green Building Council. The goal certification level was Silver, but with a diligent source separation waste plan Visco achieved an overall diversion rate of 94.6%.
