The former Edmonton Municipal Airport Parkade was a large 5 storey concrete parking garage with multiple stairwells and elevators attached to an operating school by a pedway.

Technical Demolition:

The pedway was removed first by separating each end from the adjoining structures and then deconstructing the pedway using a hydraulic shear. The parkade was constructed using post-tensioned precast concrete beams. The tensioned cable was safely removed from the concrete with pulverizers and jackhammers. The structure was removed in sections starting on the first two levels and using the concrete to build a ramp to provide access to the higher levels.

Mitigation of Impacts of Demolition Activity:

Performing demolition adjacent to an operating school required a detailed plan to minimize the disruption to students and school activities. Disruptive activities and road/sidewalk closures were scheduled during off-peak hours. Utilizing our most experienced operators with multiple pulverizers allowed Visco to complete the parkade demolition and removal within 6 weeks.

Environmental Sustainability:

All the concrete from slabs, foundations and site improvements was crushed into concrete aggregate and left on site for future use by the City of Edmonton. The metal cable and rebar were recycled by Visco.
